Key rules

  • § 5.3.3p. 5-7

In a dual air system at operating rpm, pressure should build from 85 to 100 psi within 45 seconds. Slow buildup can let pressure drop too low on the road, so get it fixed before you drive.

Step 7 Final Air Brake Check

  • § 5.3.3p. 5-7

Older single air systems typically need to build from 50 to 90 psi within 3 minutes at a 600 to 900 rpm idle. The 45-second figure is for dual air systems.

Step 7 Final Air Brake Check

  • § 5.3.3p. 5-7

The service brake test can reveal brake problems before you need the brakes on the road. Watch for the vehicle pulling to one side, an unusual feel, or a delayed stop.

Step 7 Final Air Brake Check

  • § 5.3.3p. 5-7

The warning must come on before pressure in the tank with the lowest pressure falls below 55 psi. Coming on at 50 psi is too late.

Step 7 Final Air Brake Check

  • § 5.3.3p. 5-7

If the warning fails, you could lose air pressure without knowing it. In a single-circuit system, that could lead to sudden emergency braking.
